Tip = bill × tip percentage. On a bill of 84.50, an 18% tip is 15.21, making 99.71; split three ways, each person pays 33.24. Rounding each share up to 34 makes the tip 17.50. Tipping customs differ: about 15% to 20% is usual in the US and Canada, and around 10% in the UK, Australia and India when service is not already included.

Formula
Tip = bill × tip % ÷ 100Total = bill + tipPer person = total ÷ number of people
Worked Example
A bill of 84.50, 18% tip, 3 people:
Tip = 84.50 × 0.18 = 15.21
Total = 84.50 + 15.21 = 99.71
Each = 99.71 ÷ 3 = 33.24

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I work out a tip?
Multiply the bill by the percentage and divide by 100. 15% of 60 is 60 × 15 ÷ 100 = 9. A quick way: 10% is the bill with the decimal point moved one place, so 15% is that plus half again.
How much should I tip?
In the US and Canada 15% to 20% at a restaurant is usual. In the UK, Australia and India around 10% is common, and nothing extra is expected if a service charge is already on the bill.
How do I split a bill with the tip?
Add the tip to the bill, then divide by the number of people. 99.71 between 3 is 33.24 each.
Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?
Most people tip on the amount before tax, but tipping on the total is also common. Enter whichever amount you prefer.
What does rounding up do to the tip?
It adds a little to the tip so everyone pays a whole amount. 33.24 each rounded to 34 adds 2.29 in total.
