FORMWORK · FIELD TOOL

Formwork Material Estimator

For slab formwork, count bearers (W ÷ bearer spacing + 1), joists (L ÷ joist spacing + 1) and props (bearers × (L ÷ prop spacing + 1)). A 6 × 5 m slab 200 mm thick on joists at 400 mm and bearers and props at 1.2 m needs 12 sheets, 80 m of joists, 36 m of bearers and 36 props at about 11 kN each.

Check plywood, joists and bearers for bending and deflection at these spacings, and props against their safe working load at the extended height. This tool counts materials; it does not check their strength.

Working
  1. Bearers = ⌈W ÷ 1,200⌉ + 1 = 6, each 6.00 m
  2. Joists = ⌈L ÷ 400⌉ + 1 = 16, each 5.00 m
  3. Props = bearers × (⌈L ÷ 1,200⌉ + 1) = 36
  4. Soffit load = concrete + 0.5 kPa forms + 2.4 kPa live (min 4.8 kPa) = 7.61 kPa
  5. Load per prop = 7.61 kPa × bearer spacing × prop spacing = 11.0 kN

Formulas

Bearers       = ⌈W ÷ bearer spacing⌉ + 1        (each L long)
Joists        = ⌈L ÷ joist spacing⌉ + 1          (each W long)
Props         = bearers × (⌈L ÷ prop spacing⌉ + 1)
Soffit load   = ρ·g·t + 0.5 kPa + 2.4 kPa        (≥ 4.8 kPa)
Load per prop = soffit load × bearer spacing × prop spacing

Worked example

A 6 × 5 m slab, 200 mm thick, joists at 400 mm, bearers at 1.2 m, props at 1.2 m along each bearer:

  1. Sheets = ⌈30 × 1.1 ÷ 2.977⌉ = 12
  2. Bearers = ⌈5 ÷ 1.2⌉ + 1 = 6 × 6 m = 36 m
  3. Joists = ⌈6 ÷ 0.4⌉ + 1 = 16 × 5 m = 80 m
  4. Props = 6 × (⌈6 ÷ 1.2⌉ + 1) = 36
  5. Soffit load = 2,400 × 9.81 × 0.2 + 500 + 2,400 = 7.61 kPa → 11.0 kN per prop

Load per prop at 1.2 × 1.2 m grid

Slab thickness Soffit load Load per prop
150 mm 6.43 kPa 9.3 kN
200 mm 7.61 kPa 11.0 kN
250 mm 8.78 kPa 12.6 kN
300 mm 9.96 kPa 14.3 kN

Assumptions

  • Interior props carry a full tributary area; edge props carry less, so the figure is conservative.
  • The calculator counts material; it does not check plywood, joist or bearer bending and deflection, or prop buckling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What materials are needed for slab formwork?

Plywood (or panels) for the soffit, joists (secondary beams) under the plywood, bearers (primary beams) under the joists, props or shoring under the bearers, plus edge forms, release agent and bracing.

What load does each slab prop carry?

The slab pressure × its tributary area. For a 200 mm slab (7.6 kPa including formwork and live load) with props at 1.2 × 1.2 m, about 11 kN.

How much release agent do I need?

Divide the area by the coverage on the product: sprayed mould oil often covers 30–50 m² per litre. Apply it for every use.
