Compressive Strength of Concrete at 14 Days

At 14 days, concrete made with normal cement reaches about 90% of its 28-day mean strength (EN 1992-1-1). For M25 that is about 29.8 MPa on a 150 mm cube, a crushing load of about 669 kN. Rapid cement gives about 92% and slow cement about 85%.

Cube strength is higher than cylinder strength: compare with a cube grade (IS 456 M-grades, or the second number of EN C25/30).

Acceptance uses groups of results, not one specimen: see IS 456 Table 11 or ACI 318 §26.12.3.

  1. Loaded area of a 150 mm cube = 22,500 mm² (34.88 in²)
  2. Strength = 669.0 kN ÷ area = 29.7 MPa
  3. Expected mean = (specified + 8 MPa) × exp{0.25 × [1 − √(28 ÷ 14)]} = 33.0 × 0.902 = 29.8 MPa (EN 1992-1-1 Eq. 3.2, standard 20 °C curing)

Formula

Expected mean at 14 days = (fck + 8 MPa) × exp{s × [1 − √(28 ÷ 14)]}
s = 0.20 rapid, 0.25 normal, 0.38 slow cement
Cube load = strength × 22,500 mm² (150 mm cube)

Worked Example

M25 concrete, normal cement, 14 days:

  1. Mean 28-day strength = 25 + 8 = 33 MPa
  2. Ratio = exp{0.25 × (1 − √(2))} = 0.902
  3. Expected mean = 33 × 0.902 = 29.8 MPa, a load of about 669 kN on a 150 mm cube

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the compressive strength of M20 concrete at 14 days?

About 25.2 MPa on average with normal cement (mean strength 28 MPa × 0.902). With rapid cement expect about 25.8 MPa, and with slow cement about 23.9 MPa.

What percentage of strength does concrete gain in 14 days?

About 90% of the 28-day mean strength with normal cement, 92% with rapid cement and 85% with slow cement such as high-slag or fly ash blends, cured at 20 °C. Cold weather slows this down.

Does the result need to equal the grade?

No. At 14 days the cube is expected to be below its 28-day strength; compare it with the expected value for this age. Early results are a guide, and the 28-day results decide acceptance.
