Unit Weight of Sand

Dry clean sand weighs 1,540 to 1,600 kg/m³ (15.1 to 15.7 kN/m³) by IS 875. River sand is about 1,840 kg/m³, and wet sand 1,760 to 2,000 kg/m³. Use the dry figure for mix design by volume, and the wet figure when working out truck loads of damp sand.

Working
  1. m = ρ × V = 1,600 kg/m³ × 1 m³ = 1,600 kg
  2. Unit weight γ = ρ × g = 1,600 kg/m³ × 9.81 ÷ 1,000 = 15.69 kN/m³

Unit Weight of Sand

From IS 875 (Part 1):1987 Table 1.

Material Unit weight Density
Sand, dry and clean 15.10 to 15.70 kN/m³ 1,540 to 1,600 kg/m³
Sand, river 18.05 kN/m³ 1,840 kg/m³
Sand, wet 17.25 to 19.60 kN/m³ 1,760 to 2,000 kg/m³

To convert: kN/m³ = kg/m³ × 9.81 ÷ 1,000; lb/ft³ = kg/m³ × 0.0624.

Worked Example

The weight of 2.5 m³ of sand:

  1. Mass = 2.5 × 1,600 = 4,000 kg
  2. Weight = 4,000 × 9.81 ÷ 1,000 = 39.2 kN

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 1 m³ of sand weigh?

About 1.5 to 1.6 tonnes dry and up to 2 tonnes wet. One CFT of dry sand weighs about 45 kg.

Why does wet sand weigh more?

Water fills the gaps between the grains and adds its own weight. Damp sand also bulks, taking up more volume, which is why sand is measured dry or corrected for bulking in mix design.

What is the unit weight of sand in lb/ft³?

About 96 to 100 lb/ft³ dry (1,540 to 1,600 kg/m³) and up to about 125 lb/ft³ wet.
