Unit Weight of Steel

Steel has a density of 7,850 kg/m³, the figure IS 1786 uses for rebar masses. Its unit weight is 7,850 × 9.81 = 77.0 kN/m³, or 490 lb/ft³. The 78.5 kN/m³ often quoted takes gravity as 10 m/s². A steel bar weighs d² ÷ 162 kg per metre, with d in mm.

Working
  1. m = ρ × V = 7,850 kg/m³ × 1 m³ = 7,850 kg
  2. Unit weight γ = ρ × g = 7,850 kg/m³ × 9.81 ÷ 1,000 = 76.98 kN/m³

Unit Weight of Steel

Material Unit weight Density
Steel (rebar and structural sections) 77.0 (78.5 with g = 10) kN/m³ 7,850 kg/m³

To convert: kN/m³ = kg/m³ × 9.81 ÷ 1,000; lb/ft³ = kg/m³ × 0.0624.

Worked Example

The weight of 2.5 m³ of steel:

  1. Mass = 2.5 × 7,850 = 19,625 kg
  2. Weight = 19,625 × 9.81 ÷ 1,000 = 192.5 kN

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a 12 mm bar weigh per metre?

12² ÷ 162 = 0.889 kg/m. A 12 m length weighs about 10.7 kg.

Where does d² ÷ 162 come from?

Mass per metre = π/4 × d² × 7,850 kg/m³, with d in metres. With d in mm this becomes d² × 0.006165, which is very close to d² ÷ 162.

Is stainless steel the same density?

Slightly heavier, about 7,900 to 8,000 kg/m³ for common grades.
